CalifornianAcross the country, our Sea Scouts are constantly feeling the demands of Scouts, sports, school, work, their future, etc. As a Sea Scout in college I can attest that I am forced to prioritize each of these when planning out my time. Many Sea Scouts may be forced to choose to sit out a Long Cruise for work or summer classes but with a unique opportunity this summer, it is going to be a little easier to balance it all.

Point Loma Nazarene University in conjunction with The Maritime Museum of San Diego and San Diego Imperial Council Sea Scouts are offering a unique opportunity of a week aboard the 145’ topsail schooner Californian and an accredited 3-unit university history course all in one.

That is right, a Sea Scout can have the best of both worlds! The Sea Scouts will cruise from July 6-12, 2015. Like any Sea Scout cruise, it includes accommodations and all meals; plus several opportunities to complete Sea Scout rank advancement requirements including participation in schooner operations, hands-on navigation and other maritime skills. All of this while traveling from San Diego to Dana Point; to West Side of Santa Catalina Island; to Santa Barbara Island; to San Clemente Island; and returning San Diego (Proposed).

The history class will be Ancient World Civilizations (HIS 110) and will be completed on-line in June and underway onboard the Californian in July. Early development of civic ideals and citizenship plus ancient maritime analogy of a “Ship of State” will be emphasized, along with the role of maritime travel. This accredited 3-unit university history course is transferable to most public & private universities to satisfy their general education requirements.
